On Wednesday, it was reported that Txiki Begiristain looks set to depart Manchester City at the end of the season after spending 13 years at the club.

It was claimed by journalist David Ornstein that Txiki Begiristain’s replacement for the role is set to begin his role early next year.

Furthermore, it was also revealed that the Spaniard has played a prominent role in handpicking his successor at Manchester City.

Ornstein also disclosed that Begiristain will help the man to succeed him in his newfound role in his final few months at the Etihad Stadium.

The man in question will certainly have a tough task on his hands.

Romano reveals “favourite” at Man City to succeed Begiristain

Txiki Begiristain has played a massive role in turning Manchester City into English football’s dominant force over the past couple of years.

Before Begiristain’s arrival in 2012, City were not considered an elite club.

However, it would be fair to claim that the former Barcelona sporting director’s arrival led to a change in fortunes at the club.

City supporters will eternally cherish Begiristain for his immaculate service for over a decade.

But the question remains which sporting director has been earmarked to succeed Txiki Begiristain.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Sporting CP’s director of football Hugo Viana is the “favourite” to replace the Manchester City chief.

Viana is believed to be at the “top” of City’s shortlist of candidates.

Who is Hugo Viana?

Hugo Viana has been Sporting CP’s sporting director since 2018.

The 41-year-old initially began his career at Beleneses.

The club is currently in the third tier of Portuguese football.

But just a year later, Viana was trusted to come in and become the director of football of Sporting CP, who are one of Portugal’s biggest clubs.

Amongst many of the brilliant players Hugo Viana has signed during his time at the club, Victor Gyokeres, Ousmane Diomande and Morten Hjumland remain some of his most prominent captures.

During Viana’s time at Sporting, his astute signings have led to the club winning the Liga Portugal twice.
