Nico Gonzalez looks set to leave Manchester City this summer.
Manchester City News exclusively confirmed on Friday that Nico was prepared to leave Pep Guardiola’s side and the club were willing to part ways with him as well, with interest in the player emerging from across Europe and Saudi Arabia.
When City signed the 23-year-old, it seemed like they had made an astute signing as he could provide cover in the holding midfield position while being a natural number eight.
Pep Guardiola lauded Nico after he was signed as well and it seemed like the La Masia graduate could hone his craft under one of the best managers in the history of the game.

Man City underwhelmed by Nico Gonzalez’s impact
However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester City do not consider Nico Gonzalez a
“crucial” part of their project, which is a shock considering they signed him in February.
Manchester City knew Nico was a central midfielder and yet, they brought him in to cover for the injured Rodri during the 2024/2025 season.
Romano has now revealed on his YouTube channel that what underwhelmed City about the former Porto dynamo is his impact upon moving to the Etihad Stadium: “I’m told there is a chance for Nico to already leave Manchester City this summer, was not probably the impact they both expected, Nico and Manchester City and in case of a good proposal, there is a chance for Nico Gonzalez to leave in this summer transfer window.”
However, Fabrizio Romano mentioned that despite Manchester City not particularly rating Nico too highly, he is not guaranteed to leave this summer: “It’s still not something guaranteed, it’s not something that’s 100 per cent guaranteed because it will depend on the proposals but Nico Gonzalez’s situation could be one to watch in case of good proposals, in case of good opportunities, he doesn’t look to be so important in the rotations of Manchester City.”
“At the moment, still, the feeling that the player is not that crucial for the project, they invested a lot of money in January.”
Nico Gonzalez has already named his dream club
In 2022, Nico expressed his love for Barcelona by revealing that he rejected Manchester City’s pursuit when he was 16 and admitted that his dream was to play at his boyhood club until the end of his career.
“I was 11 and a lot of teams wanted me, like Real Madrid, but I was always a Barça fan. And before signing I trained there and knew friends like Eric Garcia, Take Kubo and Ansu Fati. At 16, I could have gone to Manchester City but I have always wanted to succeed at Barça. And it’s not gone badly.”
Nico said at the time: “Soon, we will have to sit down and speak. It will be an important moment for my future. If Barça want, I would stay here for my whole life.”
