Fabrizio Romano shares what his Man City sources have now told him about Luis Diaz

Last week, Fabrizio Romano made an intriguing revelation about Manchester City’s thinking about replacing now-Atletico Madrid goalscorer Julian Alvarez.

Romano claimed that City’s plans to replace Alvarez involved them potentially targeting the addition of a brand-new winger instead of a natural striker.

Despite signing Savinho in the summer, as per the Italian journalist’s claim, Pep Guardiola’s side were looking to strengthen their wing department even further.

However, in the Brazilian, Jeremy Doku, Oscar Bobb and Jack Grealish, Manchester City already have some of the most exciting wide forwards in the Premier League.

Furthermore, apart from the 28-year-old Grealish, the likes of Doku, Bobb and Savinho are all under the age of 23 — which means there remains a high upside in their game.

Romano reveals the truth behind latest Man City transfer rumour

However, murmurings started to emerge about City agreeing a shock deal to sign Luis Diaz from Liverpool.

The Colombian international’s current contract at Anfield expires in 2027.

Since the Sky Blues’ decision to sell James Milner to the Merseyside-based club in 2015, both clubs are yet to do business with each other.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now spoken to his sources at Manchester City and has poured cold water over there being any agreement in place for them to sign Diaz this summer.

On X, Romano wrote: “Manchester City sources deny any agreement with Luis Diaz after recent reports.”

Luis Diaz would have been a futile signing for Man City in any case

Even if Manchester City were on the verge of signing Diaz, his addition would not have added much to their roster.

The former Porto speedster’s potential acquisition would have meant that alongside him, City had another four players capable of playing on the left-wing such as Phil Foden, Doku, Grealish and Savinho.

Furthermore, at 27 years of age, while Diaz is in the prime of his career, he has yet to successfully emerge as Sadio Mane’s long-term heir.

The two-time Carabao Cup winner’s best return in terms of goal involvements in a Liverpool shirt emerged last season as he registered a mere eight goals and four assists in the Premier League.

For a winger who should be at the peak of his powers by now, Diaz’s end product does not demand him being a target for Manchester City.

All in all, it comes as no surprise that City were not even working on a deal to sign the Barrancas-born wideman.
