Forget Alvarez: £55m player was Man City’s true beacon of hope vs Wolves – opinion

Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku was Pep Guardiola’s shining light during the recent 2-1 defeat against Wolves in the Premier League.

The Citizens found themselves 1-0 down after 13 minutes at Molineux thanks to a Ruben Dias own goal.

In the second half, Julian Alvarez drew the away side level with a free kick goal, only then for Hwang Hee-chan to put Wolves ahead again, which ultimately ended up being the winning goal of the match.

Despite succumbing to their first Premier League defeat of the season, one player who we felt put in a performance that deserved praise on this occasion is Doku.

Completing the full 97 minutes of the game, the winger had 77 touches of the ball in total and made himself a real nuisance for the opposition defence.

For example, he made four key passes in the match, more than any other City player was able to deliver.

In addition to that, Doku, who City signed for £55m during the previous summer transfer window, had six attempts at goal in total, three of which were blocked, two were off target and one being on target.

He also managed to successfully complete six of the seven dribbles he attempted, further highlighting how much of an attacking presence he had in the game.

This performance ultimately earned the attacker an overall match rating of 8.1/10 from SofaScore, making him the highest-rated player across both sides on the day.

The Manchester Evening News also picked up on the Belgian’s efforts by saying in their player ratings article that he was City’s “liveliest attacker in the first half,” and that “his pace and direct running actually brought something to the team that they were badly missing.”

With all of that in mind, it’s clear that despite the disappointing result, Doku was a beacon of hope and a real positive for the treble winners on this occasion.
