“Gaining ground”: Journalist now tips manager with 142 career wins to replace Guardiola at Manchester City

Roberto De Zerbi has now been tipped to join Manchester City when Pep Guardiola eventually leaves the Etihad Stadium.

It was Davide Chinellato – an Italian journalist – who made the claim when speaking on TV Play.

So, what was said about Roberto De Zerbi and Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Gazzetta dello Sport journalist believes the 44-year-old’s name is “gaining ground” at the Etihad Stadium, as many expect Guardiola to leave when his contract expires in June 2025.

Both the Guardian and ESPN believe the Spaniard will depart when his current deal ends.

Now, Chinellato has tipped De Zerbi for the role, saying: “Guardiola’s contract expires at the end of next season. Possible managers for Manchester City are (Mikel) Arteta, it would be an obvious choice except that now, he is doing very well with Arsenal and has become something of a rival.

“The name of De Zerbi is increasingly gaining ground and he is considered the new Guardiola in terms of playing style, approach and innovative football. Among the emerging managers in the Premier League, he is at the top of the list. If he confirms himself (as one of the best again) this year, his next step could be in a big club, perhaps even on the City bench.”

The Italian guided Brighton to sixth in the Premier League last season – securing UEFA Europa League football as a result.

De Zerbi – who has won 142 games as a manager – has continued to impress at the Amex Stadium this term, with the Seagulls currently sitting sixth in the Premier League after winning five of their opening eight outings.

Roberto De Zerbi more likely than Mikel Arteta for Manchester City

In our view – at least – De Zerbi is far more likely to replace Guardiola than Arteta is.

The Spaniard seems truly settled at the Emirates Stadium, and has created something quite impressive in north London – it feels as though he would only leave if he was sacked, which doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon.

De Zerbi – on the other hand – would surely jump at the chance to join Manchester City, who are obviously a considerable step up from Brighton.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Manchester City start to think about life after Guardiola.
