Paul Merson has claimed that Manchester City must move Kalvin Phillips out of the club this summer.
Even though the midfielder said earlier in the summer that he wants to stay at City and fight for a place in the team, he has yet to make an appearance for the Citizens this season.
With only a week left until the summer transfer window closes, one pundit has claimed that the Citizens should be looking to make an important decision about the player.
Merson says City should get rid of Phillips
Written in his latest column for Sportskeeda, Merson had this to say about Phillips and his current situation at City.
He said: “I’m not too sure about Kalvin Phillips – he doesn’t get into the team, and he barely gets any minutes.
“He’s got to move on from Man City, and I don’t get why he’s staying on. City have got to move him on while they can – there’s a good market for defensive midfielders.”
After arriving at the Manchester club back in the previous summer transfer window from Leeds United in a deal worth £45m, the England international only started four games, two of which were in the Premier League but only came after City were officially confirmed as champions.
Despite the 27-year-old’s intention to stay at the Etihad Stadium, it has recently been reported that Liverpool are interested in signing him and that City could be open to letting him leave on loan.
Given his lack of regular game time last season and the fact that the early signs in this campaign suggest that it could be the same story this time around, it’s easy to see why Merson thinks it would be the best move for all parties if Phillips were to walk away from the treble winners and join a different club where he’d likely have a better chance of playing on a regular basis.
Moving forward, with the end of the summer transfer window in sight, we feel that if an offer were to come City’s way for the midfielder, they’ll have to decide whether they feel that they can get through the season without him in their squad.
