‘Got to step up’: Pundit backs Man City star to become a ‘top player’ this season

Pundit John Giles has backed Phil Foden to become a star player for Manchester City in a midfield role.

As a result of the departure of Ilkay Gundogan and the loss of Kevin De Bruyne to injury for the next four months, Foden has featured in midfield for City’s previous two games against Sevilla in the Super Cup and Newcastle United in the Premier League.

This has since led to one pundit making a claim about the 23-year-old and what the next few weeks could hold for the player.

Speaking in a recent episode of The Stand with Eamon Dunphy, Giles had this to say about Foden.

He said: “They’ve got Foden now playing in midfield and I think he’s going to be a top player.

“He’s got to step up now because they’ve lot the players that you just mentioned. The problem is, is he mature enough as a player to do what needs to be done? I think he has the ability, but it’s a very, very difficult position for a young fella in the middle of the field to do what needs to be done.”

Having completed the full 90 minutes in both of City’s Premier League games and the Super Cup clash against Sevilla, this shows how much of an important figure he is for Pep Guardiola.

Looking back over the 1-0 win against Newcastle last weekend, not only did Foden provide the assist for Julian Alvarez’s winning goal, he also racked up more key passes (7) than any other player on the pitch.

This shows just how capable the England international is when it comes to playing in midfield and being able to be a dangerous and creative figure in the team.

Moving forward, if Foden can continue to play regularly and deliver performances like the one he put in against Newcastle, he’ll definitely do what Giles said and become a top player for City this season.
