Graeme Souness says Man City have a ‘fabulous’ player who is about to replace Jack Grealish

Graeme Souness thinks Jack Grealish has got some competition on his hands to stay in the Manchester City team.

It’s been a tough season for Grealish so far as he hasn’t been a mainstay in the starting XI as he was on the road to the treble triumph.

Fitness issues have played their part but Pep Guardiola has admitted that Grealish’s ‘season was not like last season, but he’s getting better.’

The 28-year-old has started just two games in 2024 and Souness thinks two players are pushing him for a place in the City line-up.

Speaking on TalkSport’s Simon & Souness show, Souness said on Grealish: “I would say it’s all on for him.

“He’s got that Oscar Bobb, who looks to be a fabulous player and [Jeremy] Doku. So he’s got some competition to be a starter in that team now.”

They can’t do what Jack Grealish does

It’s hard to argue with Souness, Grealish clearly has some strong competition for a spot given he hasn’t started in the Premier League since December.

It isn’t from Oscar Bobb, though. The 20-year-old has great potential but has made just three appearances in 2024.

Bobb started both FA Cup wins against Huddersfield Town and Tottenham Hotspur and came off the bench to score a great goal in the Premier League against Newcastle.

Instead, it is Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden who are occupying Grealish’s typical spot on the left.

Yet, once Grealish is back fit, he will likely be back in the side before too long as he brings a level of control and composure to the side that no one else can.

It was evident against FC Copenhagen. City were in complete dominance with Grealish on the pitch and their grip slackened when he went off injured.

He’s going to be needed when the big games start coming thick and fast.
