Journalist Mark Ogden has backed reported Manchester City transfer target, Mateo Kovacic, to be a top signing for the club.
Earlier this week, it was reported that having previously agreed personal terms with the midfielder, City are looking to strike a deal with Chelsea before the end of the month.
With that in mind, one journalist has shared his assessment on the possible addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Ogden backs Kovacic to succeed at City
Speaking in a recent video on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Ogden said this about City’s proposed move for Kovacic.
He said: “The Kovacic one is quite interesting as well because we all know that City were really big into Jude Bellingham, so to go from Bellingham to Mateo Kovacic is a surprise.
“Kovacic, great pedigree, Chelsea, Real Madrid, top-level player and I think he’s one of these players that will go to City and do a really good job.”
After initially joining Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid back in the 2018 summer transfer window, the Croatian secured a permanent deal at the west London club worth £40m a year later.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, the 29-year-old has scored six goals and supplied 15 assists in 221 appearances across all competitions.
Having made 142 appearances in the Premier League and 104 in numerous European competitions, this highlights the top-level experience Kovacic would be able to offer City, who will undoubtedly be looking to regain the three trophies they won last season once their next campaign kicks off.
Also, this move could end up being a rather important one should current City midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan decides to not sign a new deal and leave as a free agent once his contract expires at the end of the month.
Either way, if the Citizens do end up signing the Chelsea figure this summer and he then goes on to play a big part in their next season and get his hands on some silverware, this will surely make it a successful move for him and the club to make.
