Guardiola admits Haaland needs to be more involved in games after Man United loss

Pep Guardiola believes Erling Haaland needs to be more involved for Man City in their general build-up play, after his side lost 2-1 to Man United.

The Spanish tactician did not say this as a point of criticism, of course.

However, much like Guardiola, many would agree that often, Haaland is quite isolated for Man City in several games, as he was against Man United.

But it is also worth saying that not every striker in the world can or necessarily even should be in the Harry Kane or Karim Benzema mould where they are involved at all times.

The Man City No.9, like a majority of frontmen throughout history relies on the service he gets from his teammates.

And once he does, the 22-year-old has proven already that there is currently no player in world football who can take advantage when handed a big better than him.

Even Jack Grealish hinted at this very reality, as he asked Haaland where he was for Riyad Mahrez’s winner against Chelsea in the Premier League, as it almost seems inevitable that he will be perfectly positioned to bag a goal.

However, there is truth in the fact that Erling Haaland would become an even bigger asset for Man City if he was more involved in games, as Pep Guardiola implied after his side’s latest defeat to Man United.

On the day, the former Borussia Dortmund hero had a mere 19 touches.

“Yup”, Pep Guardiola replied when posed the question of whether Erling Haaland should be more involved for Man City after his side’s loss to Man United.

The Catalan boss continued, “At the moment, we have that process because when teams are sat in their 18-yard box, it is more difficult but we have to find him a little bit more, yes.”

“Against [Man] United, he had enough touches but it’s true that when you are looking at areas and you have to look at him, but we will do that”, he told MEN, as relayed by Sky Sports.

Ultimately, Erling Haaland did drop in deep areas, link play efficiently and set City in transition but for the most part, he was largely uninvolved.

But, if there’s one man who constantly finds solutions out of the blue, it is Pep Guardiola, who will eventually do the same with Erling Haaland after reflecting on his performance against Man United.
