Pep Guardiola gives damning 11-word Manchester Derby verdict after Man City lose to Southampton

Pep Guardiola gave a damning 11-word verdict on the upcoming Manchester Derby after Man City lost 2-0 to Southampton in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

With Manchester United in excellent form currently, it was always going to be a challenge for City to come out on top on derby day.

Especially after they put in what is widely considered as one of the poorest displays in the Guardiola era against Southampton.

From start to finish, a number of atrocious individual performances did not help matters.

Joao Cancelo perhaps put in his worst-ever showing, while Kyle Walker struggled at centre-back and Kalvin Phillips was underwhelming in his first ever start for the club amongst many howling performances.

With the Manchester Derby looming and Man City already 5 points in the Premier League title race behind Arsenal, a titanic task is needed for the defending champions to win on Saturday afternoon.

In addition, the Sky Blues do not have the finest record at Old Trafford in recent history to say the least, which is another factor worth considering.

Now, Guardiola has given his verdict on derby day and it does not make for great reading.

After the contest, Pep Guardiola admitted that Man City will get beaten in the Manchester Derby if they play the way they did against Southampton in their latest defeat.

“If we perform in this way, we don’t have a chance”, Guardiola said, as quoted by MEN journalist Joe Bray.

Guardiola is rarely ever critical of Man City in public, which makes his quotes telling

Generally, Pep Guardiola has a tendency not to slate his Man City side in public, especially ahead of game of the magnitude of the Manchester Derby.

The fact that Guardiola has been as blunt as he has seems to be a message to the players not to replicate their display against Southampton on Saturday, as they will likely get beaten.
