‘He was outstanding’: Pundit utterly blown away by £15m Man City player last night

Manchester City won the Champions League on Saturday evening, and all of the usual suspects have been getting the plaudits after the game.

Indeed, the likes of Rodri, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva have been making the headlines in the aftermath of the game against Inter Milan, but Mark Schwarzer has saved some special praise for Manuel Akanji.

Speaking on the GegenPod, Schwarzer was full of praise for Akanji, stating that the Swiss defender was utterly outstanding against Inter, claiming that he’s always been a big fan of the £15m man dating back to his time at Borussia Dortmund.

Akanji outstanding

Schwarzer was full of praise for Akanji.

“You look at that backline, Ederson, Dias, I thought Akanji was a wonderful signing for them. I’ve always been a big fan of Akanji, I saw him a lot at Borussia Dortmund and I thought he was outstanding. Yes, he had that mix-up with Ederson, but I thought he was very good tonight,” Schwarzer said.

Signing of the season

Schwarzer says that Akanji has been a wonderful signing, and it’s really hard to argue with that verdict.

At just £15m, Akanji has to be considered the signing of the season, not only for Man City but across the Premier League too.

He’s allowed City to seamlessly switch into this new defensive system, and he’s flourished in every single position he’s been asked to play, from right-back, to centre-back all the way to left-back.

Akanji has been something of an unsung hero this season as some of City’s more fashionable players have taken the plaudits, but after a very solid performance in the Champions League final, he deserves to be given a lot of credit.

Akanji may go down as one of the best signings City ever make.
