Matheus Nunes has said that he was a big fan of former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure.
The 25-year-old joined the Manchester club last month from Wolves in a deal worth £53m and has since gone on to make four appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side, providing one assist in the process.
Now though, the Portuguese international has been taking a look at some former City midfielders and their contributions to the club, with one, in particular, standing out to the new recruit.
Nunes raves over Toure

Speaking in a recent video shared on the club’s official YouTube channel, Nunes had this to say about Toure when reacting to some of his best moments and City, in addition to being asked if he watched a lot of the Ivorian during his time at the club and if he sees any similarities between him and the former City star.
He said: “The way he speeds up and leaves the defender behind, he was too good.
“To be honest, a lot, I watched a lot of videos of him on YouTube, I was a fan of him. I think maybe I would say when I first started watching Man City it was because of him, because I was a very big fan of him since Barcelona.
“He’s just unbelievable, his strength, his speed, his technique. I mean he was so good, maybe characteristics but he proved himself so much and I’m still starting my career here in City. I think he’s a legend here but I would say maybe the way he drives the ball forward.”

During his time at the Etihad Stadium, Toure made 316 appearances across all competitions, scoring 79 goals, delivering 49 assists and winning numerous trophies along the way including three Premier League titles.
In addition to being such a danger in front of goal from midfield, the former City star ended up getting a plaque at the City Football Academy in recognition of his eight-year spell at the club back in 2018, further highlighting the impact he had with the Citizens.
With all of that in mind, it’s easy to see why Nunes was a big admirer of Toure and his ability on the pitch.
Moving forward, if the 25-year-old can go on to be as successful at City as the Ivorian was, he’ll undoubtedly be seen as a top signing for the club.
