‘He’d walk to Catalonia’… Simon Jordan shares brutal reply to Wayne Rooney over Man City job admission

Simon Jordan has sent a brutal response to Wayne Rooney after he admitted he would love to work with Pep Guardiola.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is currently out of work after being sacked as Birmingham City manager in January.

Rooney lasted just 15 matches, winning only two, in charge at St. Andrews’ as his management career continues to struggle.

The 38-year-old also didn’t do too well during his stints in charge of Derby County and DC United in the MLS.

However, Rooney admitted he would love to work for Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola if the chance ever arose to be his assistant.

“It depends [on whether I’d ever be an assistant] – if Pep Guardiola comes in and asks me to be his assistant, you’d walk there!” Rooney said on the Stick to Football podcast.

However, radio pundit Simon Jordan doesn’t think that’s very likely and had a savage response to Rooney’s hopeful admission.

Simon Jordan’s brutal reply to Wayne Rooney

Jordan said on TalkSport: “I am imagening if he heard that Wayne Rooney wanted to ‘walk’ to Manchester City, he would walk to Catalonia to avoid him!

“Given his managerial career literally represents nothing, I think if he got an opportunity to work with the greatest coach we have in the Premier League – or be it I think Jurgen Klopp is close to that, I would be surprised if he said no to working with Klopp as well – you’re learning at the feet of people who know exactly what they are doing.

“Rather than going across to America, managing a 27 per cent win record and then bringing that particularly wonderful achievement back to the UK and making it worse.

“His performance [Rooney] has been equivalent to a number two.”

Harsh but fair

Jordan’s response may well be harsh but it’s hard to disagree too much with it.

Though he is, without doubt, the best manager on the planet, Guardiola hasn’t won all his trophies on his own.

The Catalonian has assembled a fantastic back-room team comprised of coaches often capable of being managers in their own right.

Mikel Arteta has enjoyed great success since taking over Arsenal, winning the FA Cup and turning the Gunners into title contenders, after three years as Guardiola’s assistant.

Former assistant Enzo Maresca is now flying at the top of the Championship with Leicester City and current assistant Juanma Lillo has over 40 years of management experience.

Guardiola doesn’t just hire anybody to be in his coaching team. You need credentials and it’s hard to see if Rooney has any.
