Tim Sherwood has backed Manchester City winger Jack Grealish to be a vital figure for England in the European Championship next year.

Having already secured their place in the tournament, England’s latest game saw them beat Malta 2-0 at Wembley Stadium last night.

With Grealish not featuring in this game, one pundit and former Premier League manager has been sharing his thoughts on the winger and the role he should play in the Euros next year.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Sherwood had this to say about Grealish and his potential inclusion in the England starting XI for the Euros.

He said: “For me, Jack Grealish has to be there. I worked with Jack, I know what he’s like but for Phil Foden not to be in this starting line up is criminal. Both of these players have to be in the team. We have to build teams around players with ability like this.

“I’ve work with this boy, I know how good he is, he’s incredible and I think in an England shirt, on the big occasion, he’ll stick his chest out and he’ll be the absolute top man.”

The previous international break saw Grealish provide the assist in England’s 1-0 friendly win over Australian before being a late substitute in their 3-1 victory against Italy, which secured England’s place in the Euros.

Having been an unused substitute for last night’s win over Malta, it’ll be interesting to see if Gareth Southgate rotates his side for Monday’s match against North Macedonia and picks the City winger in his starting XI.

Even though the 28-year-old hasn’t been able to score a goal for Pep Guardiola’s side in all competitions this season, the fact that he has started in some of City’s big games against the likes of RB Leipzig, Manchester United and Newcastle United shows how reliable he can be in big occasions.

This also backs up why Sherwood thinks Grealish could be a pivotal figure for England in the Euros.

Moving forward, we feel that, from a City perspective, it would be great to see Grealish start delivering more goal contributions on a regular basis, although as long as his overall performances are at a high standard, he should be a shoe-in to be fairly prominent player in the England team for the Euros.
