Pep Guardiola says Kevin De Bruyne has been his most important player during his time in charge of Manchester City.
The Spaniard could see his side do something they haven’t done before in their history and win the Champions League if they beat Inter Milan this evening.
Having already won his fifth Premier League title and second FA Cup, the 52-year-old has highlighted one player in his squad that has been particularly significant during his reign at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola hails De Bruyne
Speaking to Thierry Henry for CBS Sports Golazo, Guardiola said this when asked about De Bruyne and what it is that makes him the player he is.
He said: “He’s a special person, so sensitive and he’s reliable in many things so what we have done this season, many years, without him would be almost impossible.”
With 314 games for City under Guardiola to his name, the midfielder has scored 80 goals and provided 139 assists, which showcases how valuable he has been for the club in terms of them winning so many domestic trophies.
This season has seen the Belgian, who has previously been described as a “genius” by Jamie Redknapp, score 10 goals and deliver 31 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.
Some of those goal contributions have come in some of City’s biggest games of the season such as league outings against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal as well as against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
Now that the Citizens have the chance to crown themselves as the champions of Europe, this is the best opportunity possible for De Bruyne to show how important he can be once again and deliver on the biggest stage.
