While the La Liga winner has all the traits to thrive under Guardiola, he is quite similar to Kovacic as a player and is also not much of a final third threat.
Instead, a more advanced midfielder would perhaps be the better choice for a City side that lack a goal threat out wide in any case.
Unless a deeper-lying midfielder can operate in the ‘John Stones role’, where he can either start as a right-back or a centre-back, one struggles to understand why De Jong would be the Sky Blues’ priority in the transfer market.
