'He's almost perfect': Jamie Carragher explains why Liverpool need a player like Nathan Ake

Jamie Carragher has said that Liverpool are in desperate need of a player like Manchester City defender Nathan Ake.

The Dutchman has been outstanding for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Micah Richards calling him the side’s Player of the Season after Erling Haaland.

So much so that according to Jamie Carragher, in a chat with The Anfield Wrap, Nathan Ake would play a key role in elevating this Liverpool side.

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool need a defender like Nathan Ake

Before the start of the campaign, the former Bournemouth centre-back was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea.

However, Ake has played an instrumental role in how much City have improved defensively, slotting in at left-back after the World Cup and making the position his own.

Jamie Carragher has now broken down why Liverpool need a player like Nathan Ake on their books.

“I think he should look at a centre-back. I think we should get a left-sided centre-back.  You look at Ake and he’s almost perfect. I used to think about him for Liverpool a couple of years ago because of his relationship with Van Dijk in the Dutch team as well. When the ball comes across to Virgil, because he’s not left-footed, unless the big switch is on, he will give it to [Ibrahima] Konate or [Joel] Matip. If we have a left-footed player it opens the game up.”

Nathan Ake has seen his reputation shoot up this season

One can safely say that apart from Jamie Carragher, a number of pundits would have even rejected the notion that Nathan Ake was at the level to start for Liverpool.

However, Ake has proven this season that he is one of the pure defenders in the business, extremely versatile and technically secure.

If Manchester City do go on to win the treble, a huge contributor to the historic achievement would be the 28-year-old.

At the end of the day, it is nice to see Nathan Ake get the credit he deserves.
