‘He’s brilliant’: Sam Allardyce says £35m player is actually Man City’s best passer, not De Bruyne

Sam Allardyce has claimed that Ederson is the best passer at Manchester City.

The 68-year-old had a first-hand look at what strengths Pep Guardiola’s side have last month, as his first game in charge of Leeds United saw them lose 2-1 to City at the Etihad Stadium.

With the Premier League season now over and Leeds failing to keep their place in the top flight, despite Allardyce’s efforts, the former Whites manager has shared his thoughts on one particular City player and his best attribute.

Allardyce praises Ederson’s passing ability

Speaking on the latest edition of the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Allardyce said this about Ederson.

He said: “Ederson is the best long passer they’ve got. Nobody can pass the ball better than him over 40, 50 metres and he picks the right pass, he’s brilliant.”

Having played more minutes than any other City player in the league this season, the Brazilian completed 1079 of the 1257 passes he attempted, leaving him with a passing accuracy percentage of 85.8%, higher than the likes of Bernardo Silva (85.4%), Jack Grealish (84.1%) and Kevin De Bruyne (73.3%).

In terms of his passing at a medium distance between 15 and 30 yards, Ederson has the highest accuracy percentage (98.4%) in the squad out of players that attempted more than 13 of these types of passes.

Then regarding longer passes over 30 yards, only Rodri (300) completed more of these passes than the City goalkeeper (278), who joined the club back in 2017 for a fee of £35m.

These comments from Allardyce are not the first positive words spoken about the 29-year-old’s passing ability, as Guardiola previously described Ederson as being the best goalkeeper he has managed in terms of having the ball at his feet.
