A claim has been made that Manchester City-linked left-back Ian Maatsen has refused to extend his contract with Chelsea.

This comes from journalist Nizaar Kinsella on London Is Blue- Chelsea FC Podcast after it was reported last Thursday that City were interested in his signature.

Now, it seems like Chelsea starlet Ian Maatsen has given Manchester City hope of signing him by rejecting a brand-new contract.

Branded as a ‘clever’ player by his former mentor at Burnley, Andy Myers (via Chelsea’s official website), the Dutchman is one of the most talented up-and-coming full-backs in the world.

Under Vincent Kompany’s guidance, the youngster tore the Championship to shreds, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that the club were willing to pay as much as £31.5 million to sign him on deadline day.

The reason behind why Manchester City target Ian Maatsen has refused to sign a contract with Mauricio Pochettino’s side has come to the fore.

“I know this for sure that [Chelsea have] offered a contract to Ian Maatsen. He’s not signed it. I think the reason he’s not signed was because the terms didn’t make him seem like a particularly important player.”

Ian Maatsen would become a superstar under Pep Guardiola

If Ian Maatsen continues not to sign a contract with Chelsea and ends up joining Manchester City, the prospect of watching him develop under Pep Guardiola is an exciting one.

Considering Vincent Kompany plays a similar style of play to the Spaniard, one has already witnessed him be a perfect fit in such a philosophy.

To add to that, Guardiola’s track record, especially with younger players is flawless.

As a result, if the treble-winners are keen on adding a natural left-back to their disposal like Maatsen, they could be buying a prospect that only needs the Catalan’s guidance to reach the top.
