Rico Lewis was full of praise for Joao Cancelo, who is currently on loan at Barcelona from Manchester City.
The City right-back was asked to rank the best goals scored by some defenders at the club as part of a tier list [via the club’s official YouTube channel].
Rico Lewis was asked to give his thoughts on the screamer from Joao Cancelo in the Sky Blues’ 6-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest last season.
Rico Lewis hails Joao Cancelo
The Portuguese full-back managed to find the top corner from outside the box after a rasping effort.
During the contest, Pep Guardiola’s men put in a statement display, with Erling Haaland scoring a hat-trick and Julian Alvarez bagging a brace as well in an all-round swashbuckling showing from the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.
When Rico Lewis was asked his thoughts on the belter from Joao Cancelo, he replied, “This one’s a joke!”

Lewis continued to praise Cancelo, saying, “He’s got that quality where he can do that so many times in every game, such a threat from full-back. It’s a joke, that one’s got to be in [the] A [tier of goals].”
“He’s had so many good goals, it’s hard to choose but that’s a joke of a goal.
“He can play on both sides as well, he’s so versatile, he’s so good.”
The 19-year-old should be inspired by the Manchester City loanee
Training and playing with Joao Cancelo over the years, Rico Lewis seems to understand how special a full-back he is.
Much like Cancelo, Lewis is also capable of playing as both a right-back and a left-back.
But it is evident that the Englishman is much more comfortable as a right-back.
However, Rico Lewis must aspire to become as comfortable as Joao Cancelo is on both sides of the pitch to set himself apart from the rest.
The 19-year-old must also focus on becoming a much bigger creative presence than he currently is and studying Joao Cancelo’s could push him to elevate his levels in this respect as well.
While Lewis perhaps currently cannot due to Cancelo being at Barcelona on loan, he could watch clips of his or look back on his time playing with him.
