Footage has emerged of what Pep Guardiola said to Phil Foden after he signed his latest Manchester City contract last season.

Back in October 2022, Foden signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2027.

With some time having passed since this big moment in the 23-year-old’s City career, footage has surfaced of what Guardiola said to the midfielder shortly after his contract extension was signed.

During the second episode of the Together: Treble Winners documentary series on Netflix, Guardiola was seen speaking to Foden on the training pitch after the Englishman put pen to paper on his contract and said this to him.

He said: “Honestly, you deserve it. I’m so proud of you.”

During his time in City’s youth ranks, the 23-year-old scored 21 goals and supplied 13 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

Since making his senior debut for the club back in November 2017, Foden has gone on to make 260 appearances for City in total prior to tonight’s Premier League match against Aston Villa, scoring 78 goals and delivering 58 assists along the way.

This season has seen the England international feature in all but three of City’s games in all competitions, showcasing how much of an important player he is for Guardiola.

Having found the back of the net 18 times and delivered 10 assists, this further highlights how much the midfielder has paid back the faith put into him by the club and his manager.

Now that Guardiola’s reaction to Foden’s contract extension from last season has come to light, it’s clear that he is a big admirer of the academy graduate, who has since shown everyone at the club why they were right to offer him an extension in the first place.
