Manchester City fans have been praising a 17-year-old prodigy in the EDS for his impressive EFL Trophy display against Oldham Athletic.

Ben Wilkinson’s charges raced into a 3-0 lead by half-time, courtesy of goals from Mahamadou Sangare, Justin Oboavwoduo and Ashton Muir.

Oldham reduced the deficit through a Luke Hannant penalty early in the second half, but Sangare and Muir netted again for a 5-1 win.

Although Sangare and Muir stood out for their respective braces, another City player who was involved in the build-up to one of the goals earned extensive praise.

Manchester City fans hail Stephen Mfuni

The player in question is Stephen Mfuni, whose impressive display for City’s EDS had fans singing his praises.

The 17-year-old created the opening goal with a defence-splitting pass which set up Sangare and shone in terms of his defensive duties.

“Stephen Mfuni, that pass man,” one City fan wrote on X, while another said: “If Everton signed Khusanov and Mfuni on loan they’d win the league.”

Another praised Mfuni alongside two of his teammates, saying: “Bring me McAidoo, Mfuni and Samuel minutes in the cups.”

The praise kept coming, with one supporter saying: “Mfuni is just nuts man, that pass.”

Others lauded Mfuni alongside other teammates.

One wrote: “We’re seeing a lot of top young talent like Rio Ngumoha, Max Dowman and Josh Acheampong getting thrown in at the deep end this season!

“Let’s throw Heskey, Mukasa, McAidoo and Mfuni in, to name a few! If you’re good enough, you’re old enough, forget throwing £100m at Rodrygo.”

Another said: “Such a delight to see #ManCity EDS last night at Oldham. Some wonderful talent on show.

“Mfuni and Sangare the pick. But the central 3 of Fapetu, Heskey and Oboavwoduo were terrific and ran the show.”

Oboavwoduo also impressed for City’s EDS on the day, clocking up some superb stats.

Only a matter of time before Stephen Mfuni is in first-team picture

It was reported on Wednesday that Man City insiders see Mfuni as someone who could break into the first-team picture in future.

It’s not very often that a 17-year-old already has a year’s experience in playing for the Under-21s, but that’s exactly where Mfuni is at.

Described as a “unicorn” and an “exceptional talent”, it’s surely only a matter of time before Mfuni is called up to training with City’s first team.

Reigan Heskey, Ryan McAidoo and Divine Mukasa have been promoted to first-team training ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion, according to the MEN.
