Manchester City return to Carabao Cup competition on Wednesday night and they have a tricky tie against Tottenham Hotspur to negotiate.

The fixtures are coming thick and fast for Manchester City and if it isn’t Champions League football to keep them occupied midweek then it’s the Carabao Cup.

City haven’t won the trophy they used to dominate since 2021 and Pep Guardiola will no doubt want to change that but Tottenham Hotspur stand in their way.

The Blues have struggled on visits to Spurs in recent years, though they did finally win there for the first time towards the end of last season.

Here’s everything you need to know about the fixture.

Tottenham vs Manchester City team news

Guardiola didn’t suggest that any of his injured stars would be back available for Wednesday’s game so City will likely continue to be without six players.

Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and Oscar Bobb are long-term absentees while Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku and Kyle Walker remain sidelined.

Speaking after Saturday’s win over Southampton, Guardiola even suggested he would play a team largely made up of youngsters in the game.

When asked by BBC MOTD if he expects any of his injured stars to be available on Wednesday, the manager replied: “I don’t think so.

“We will see what happens. In this calendar, the Carabao Cup is just to play with the young players.

“We will see if we play with academy players or see how they come back fresh from that.”

Tottenham, meanwhile, will be without captain Son Heung-min, Wilson Odobert and Djed Spence.

Prediction

It’s hard to make a prediction for a game when you can’t be certain how strong a team Guardiola will select.

There will be at least three senior players involved given Nathan Ake, Ilkay Gundogan and Stefan Ortega are likely to start alongside first-teamers James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly.

Yet, the Blues boss might use academy starlets to fill up the rest of the team rather than risk picking up any more injuries.

Spurs will also be desperate for a positive result after losing to Crystal Palace at the weekend. If they want it more, they may well get the win.
