Hugo Lloris suggests player who left Man City in 2021 was better than Wayne Rooney

The Premier League have seen a vast number of top-class strikers play for a range of clubs over the past 30 years.

One of which is Wayne Rooney, who bagged 208 goals in 491 combined top-flight appearances for Manchester United and Everton.

Having won five league titles during his time with the Red Devils, the former striker was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame back in 2022.

Despite Rooney being such a revered former top-flight star, someone else who knows what it takes to play in the Premier League for a significant period of time has claimed that a former Manchester City star was actually better than the Englishman.

Hugo Lloris picks Sergio Aguero over Wayne Rooney in social media striker challenge

Appearing in a recent video shared on the official Goal TikTok channel, Hugo Lloris was involved in a winner-stays-on challenge where he had to pick between certain past and present strikers based on who he thinks is better.

The first decision the Frenchman had to make was to pick between Rooney and Sergio Aguero, to which the former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper picked the Argentine.

Aguero vs Rooney

During his time at the Etihad Stadium between 2011 and 2021, Aguero found the back of the net 184 times in 275 Premier League games.

As the club’s all-time record goalscorer, the former centre-forward, who named Phil Foden as his favourite current Blues player back in June, is undoubtedly recognised as a City legend.

Against Lloris, the Argentine played in 14 games for City, scoring past the Frenchman on 10 occasions across all competitions.

In comparison, Rooney scored four goals in six games against Lloris during his time at United.

Even though both Aguero and Rooney are undoubtedly two of the best strikers the Premier League has seen, this could be why Lloris picked the former City star over the Englishman.

From a City fan’s point of view, we feel that not many of them would disagree with the former goalkeeper’s pick in this particular instance given how much of an impact Aguero had on the club.
