‘I asked him’: Rodri shares what John Stones told him after being subbed off with injury

After Manchester City drew 1-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion, Rodri was quizzed about how serious the injury sustained to John Stones was.

The Spanish international gave the club media a fitness update about his teammate.

With Manchester City having to play in the FA Cup and the Champions League final, the fanbase would be hoping that the injury suffered by John Stones against Brighton & Hove Albion was not overly serious.

Rodri gives John Stones injury update after Manchester City drew to Brighton

Branded as ‘brilliant’ by Jermaine Jenas, the English centre-back has arguably been at his absolute best this season.

Operating in a hybrid role, as he shifts from either centre-back or right-back into midfield, there is a case to be made that Pep Guardiola’s current tactical setup is the most reliant on the 28-year-old.

As Manchester City fans are understandably worried about John Stones’ injury after he was hauled off against Brighton, Rodri assured that there was nothing to be worried about.

“No, he’s fine. He went down to make the substitution, but I asked him and he was pretty good.”

Manchester City must be breathing a collective sigh of relief

With the FA Cup and the Champions League final left to play, an injury to John Stones against Brighton would have been devastating, if not for a positive update from Rodri.

It would not be an outlandish statement to suggest that Stones has been the best as well as the most well-rounded central defender in the world.

As mentioned earlier, Guardiola’s current setup would perhaps not be at its fluid best, if not for the former Everton defender’s tactical intelligence.

Perhaps the next best option would be to play either Manuel Akanji or Rico Lewis in that role, which may be a risk in finals against Manchester United and Inter Milan.

Now, one awaits to see whether John Stones is rested against Brentford or is fit enough to start on Sunday as well.
