David James has said that Rodri would be a brilliant candidate to become the next captain of Manchester City after Ilkay Gundogan’s exit.
Speaking on City’s official YouTube channel, the well-known pundit was quizzed about whether the £62.8 million (Independent) man would suit the role.
David James believes Rodri would be a suitable fit to captain Manchester City next season and going forward.
David James backs Rodri as the perfect candidate to replace Ilkay Gundogan as Manchester City captain
Branded as ‘absolutely incredible’ by Nedum Onuoha, the 27-year-old was one of the Sky Blues’ five skippers in the previous campaign, according to a report by Manchester Evening News.
Over his time at the club, the Spanish international has showcased his leadership qualities on the pitch, especially by leading by example in the biggest moments.
David James believes that if Rodri was appointed as the brand-new captain of Manchester City, he would thrive when handed the added responsibility.

“I think so. Gundogan was an interesting one because to have the No.1 captain not start all the games…I’m trying to think did anyone start all the games from last season? I don’t think so.”
David James pinpointed why Rodri makes sense as a candidate to become the next Manchester City captain, saying, “But Rodri was the highest [in terms of starts], other than Ederson, I think, played the most games the season before, [he] was probably top last season.”
“So, you’ve got a player who can be a captain who’s always going to be there or pretty much always going to be there and like Nedum [Onuoha] says, he’s just a decent bloke, isn’t he?”
Rodri would be a brilliant fit for the role
David James is spot on about the three-time Premier League winner being a splendid candidate to take over the reins from Ilkay Gundogan and captain Manchester City.
The Spaniard, much like the now-Barcelona midfielder is one who lets his football do the talking, especially when City are begging for his magnificence to stand out. Case in point, the Champions League final.
The former Atletico Madrid anchor rarely ever lets his standards slip and is not afraid to gee up his teammates to strive for better vocally as well, which makes him a potentially brilliant choice to don the armband.
