Tim Sherwood has suggested that Rodri would be a starter for the England national team if he was English.

The recent international break saw Phil Foden, Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker all get minutes for Gareth Southgate’s side across their two games against Ukraine and Scotland.

However, one pundit and former Premier League manager shared his thoughts on another City player he feels would be a regular in the England team if he happened to be English.

Speaking on a recent edition of the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sherwood had this to say about Rodri.

He said: “Do you think Rodri would play for England if he was English? I think he might.”

Since arriving at the Manchester club back in 2019 from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £62m, the midfielder has made 213 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and delivering 18 assists.

So far this season, the Spaniard has started all four of City’s Premier League games ahead of today’s away clash against West Ham United, making him one of the four outfield players to do so.

Having kept Phillips out of the starting XI, it would be safe to suggest that Rodri would be ahead of him in the England pecking order as well.

Then with Declan Rice being a regular for Southgate’s side, the fact that the City star has racked up a higher passing accuracy percentage (93.9% vs 91.6%) than the Englishman in the league this season, as well as making more shot-creating actions (17 vs 3), carries into the final third of the pitch (8 vs 5) and recoveries (34 vs 23) shows why he could be a better option for England than the Arsenal figure.
