I was "close" to joining City, says Cristiano Ronaldo

In his controversial interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed the truth about how close he came to joining Manchester City.

Ronaldo to City could have been a reality

During the summer of 2021, the Portuguese captain looked set to sever his ties with Manchester United by joining their cross-town rivals.

With Tottenham Hotspur managing to keep hold of Harry Kane, the Sky Blues were in desperate need for a successor to Sergio Aguero, who had departed the club to sign for Barcelona.

While a move involving Ronaldo to the Etihad Stadium seemed like it was destined to get over the line, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reported back in August last year that City decided to back out of the negotiations to sign him.

The Premier League champions were said to “clear” about their stance, while no fee or personal terms were agreed with Juventus for the veteran striker.

Despite Pep Guardiola’s side becoming a laughing stock amongst several supporters for rejecting the chance to sign one of the game’s greatest ever players, it’s safe to say that the 37-year old’s time at United has failed to meet expectations.

As it seems inevitable that Ronaldo will bid farewell to Old Trafford after a tumultuous campaign where he has started a mere 4 league games for the club, he has lifted the lid on his potential switch to Manchester City.

Ronaldo discusses City move in Piers Morgan interview

On the official Piers Morgan Uncensored channel, Cristiano Ronaldo said, “It was close. They spoke a lot and [Pep] Guardiola said they tried hard to have me. But my heart, my feeling and what I had done before, and Sir Alex Ferguson made the difference.”

Ultimately, Manchester City’s foresight has been rewarded a season later, as they ended up signing 22-year old Erling Haaland, who is undoubtedly the best striker in the world.
