Stefan Ortega has said that if he knew he had no chance of becoming the No.1 at Manchester City, he would have even made the move.

In an interview with 11 Freunde Magazine, the German goalkeeper made this admission about his situation at the Etihad Stadium.

It seems like Stefan Ortega has no intention just to be an understudy to Ederson at Manchester City.

Stefan Ortega says he would not have made Manchester City move if he had no chance of becoming their No.1

Recently as well, after the 30-year-old was handed a rare start against Brighton & Hove Albion, he admitted that he aims to play on a much more regular basis at City.

Since signing for the Sky Blues last summer, Ortega has been a smash hit, easily establishing himself as the club’s best-ever second-choice goalkeeper.

But now, it seems like Stefan Ortega has his sights firmly set on taking Ederson’s place as the No.1 at Manchester City.

“I want to be the number one at Manchester City, otherwise I wouldn’t have come at all”, he said.

Stefan Ortega will struggle to displace Ederson

While Stefan Ortega would undoubtedly start for most teams in the Premier League and even in Europe, Ederson is an indispensable presence in this Manchester City side.

Even in games where Ortega comes in, while he might be on par with the Brazilian as a shotstopper, the same cannot be said about his distribution.

The ex-Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper is brilliant with the ball at his feet but Ederson could well be the greatest the game has ever seen in this respect.

In a Pep Guardiola team of all teams, this could be the most valuable trait a goalkeeper can have.

With Ederson having taken strides as a shotstopper as well since last season, his understudy’s chances of starting seem much likelier elsewhere.
