Phil Foden has admitted that in his eyes, he is not a world-class player yet.
After Manchester City narrowly defeated Brentford 1-0 last Saturday, Pep Guardiola dubbed the 23-year-old as a “world-class, top player.”
However, Rio Ferdinand claimed that while the Stockport-born midfielder has the potential to earn such status one day, he has yet to do so.
Phil Foden admits he “wouldn’t say” he is “world-class” yet
Considering Foden has been the protagonist behind Manchester City’s Premier League title charge, the spotlight has been on him massively, with Paul Merson also claiming that he is “world-class.”
As the debate rages on about whether Phil Foden can now be considered world-class or not, the man himself believes he has a way to go to be named alongside the elite cohort of players in world football.

“I wouldn’t say world-class yet, I think I’ve got the potential to be but to hear that from the manager is special for me”, he said [via Manchester City’s official website].
“I still want to keep improving and try to be an even better player. To do it for a number of years, that’s when you get the world-class status.”
“I have to do it consistently in the biggest games and biggest occasions.”
Perfect for Manchester City that Phil Foden is striving for bigger and better things
Phil Foden seems to have the hunger to deliver to such an extent that his being world-class becomes a unanimous opinion one day, as it is with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland and Rodri.
It would be far from ideas for Manchester City if the £225,000-a-week (Sport Rac) man was content with the level he is currently at and did not strive for more, considering the tremendous potential he has.
Countless talents, similar to or even tiers below the Englishman reach a point in their careers where they seemingly no longer aim to reach the stars and eventually, their stocks drop to an all-time low.
But Phil Foden seems to possess a relentless desire to reach the top, which is perhaps the ultimate secret behind why he has always improved as a player over time.
