The latest 2-2 draw between Manchester City and Arsenal was perhaps the most intense game between Premier League title rivals to have been played in years.

When Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s City and Liverpool sides went toe-to-toe with each other, the games were fiery but not to the extent of the battle on Sunday.

In the first half, it seemed like both teams came out to win and make a real statement at the Etihad Stadium.

From the get-go, the intensity began with Kai Havertz barging into Rodri a few seconds after kick-off.

When Erling Haaland was contesting a header with William Saliba, he did the same to the Frenchman.

For two teams who are excellent footballing sides, the physicality was well and truly on show between them.

Wright slams Man City player after 2-2 draw against Arsenal

Brawls continued to break out multiple times during the clash as both teams seemed well up for showing the other that they are ready for war.

Often, such games tend to be psychological battles.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal seemed like they would exert their authority over the other.

As Haaland threw the ball at Gabriel Magalhaes’ head after John Stones’ late goal, his decision to do so has split opinion.

Gabriel reacted to Haaland’s antics by claiming that he could not recall the incident.

Nedum Onuoha found Haaland’s antics “very funny” as he discussed his battle with the Brazilian.

However, Ian Wright criticised the £51 million man’s actions.

On the Kelly and Wrighty Show, the pundit said: “I don’t feel good about that at all. This is a rivalry between a striker and defender and I wouldn’t do it behind his back. That wasn’t jovial at all, he’s in his head, his back is turned and he’s in his head. Everyone I did my stuff to I can look them in the eye and we can have a drink now. Gabriel won’t be happy with that. I just didn’t like it.”

What Erling Haaland did to Gabriel should be seen as a light-hearted incident

Haaland’s antics should be viewed as petty and in line with his seeming rivalry with Gabriel rather than a serious incident.

The 24-year-old’s actions did not cross the line of violence and instead, it was a mere humorous incident.

The Norwegian international clearly embraces the enmity Manchester City and Arsenal look like they share.

Often, there has been discourse around how Premier League games lack a level of bite.

Haaland, despite being a global superstar looks like he is prepared to be embroiled in the rivalry, which makes his battles with Gabriel thoroughly entertaining.
