Alan Shearer has claimed that he’d score as many goals as Erling Haaland if he was playing for Manchester City.
The pundit made 699 club appearances across his career playing for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, scoring 361 goals along the way.
As the Premier League’s top goalscorer with 260 goals under his belt in 441 league games, it’s safe to say that he knows a thing or two about finding the back of the net.
In fact, with the new league campaign now underway, the pundit has shared his thoughts on which current club he thinks he’d be able to score lots of goals for.
Shearer says he’d score bags of goals for City
In a recent Q&A on The Athletic, Shearer had this to say when asked which current Premier League side he’d choose to play in if he was playing today in his prime.
He said: “You would have to look at Man City and Pep [Guardiola], just because of how many chances they create. I’d fancy myself to get a few goals for them, maybe even as many as Erling!”
Taking into account how Guardiola has coached some top-quality strikers during his managerial career such as Sergio Aguero, David Villa, Robert Lewandowski and Haaland, who scored 52 goals in 53 appearances for City last season, it’s safe to say that a player like Shearer in his prime would be a huge asset for the Spaniard.
In addition to scoring lots of goals, it’s likely that Shearer would be able to get his hands on a significant amount of silverware if he were part of Guardiola’s squad given how many trophies they’ve lifted since his appointment back in 2016.
