The agent of Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan has reacted to the transfer speculation surrounding his client potentially joining Barcelona.
It was reported earlier that the £165,000-a-week (Salary Sport) was ‘likely’ to accept a move to the Catalan juggernaut.
As the transfer situation surrounding Manchester City legend Ilkay Gundogan remains in the air, his agent has now given his thoughts on the rumours linking him to a summer transfer to Barcelona.
Gundogan agent reacts to Barcelona transfer rumours
Branded as a ‘standout’ performer by Alan Shearer, as quoted by Manchester Evening News, the German international’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
With there being no indication about Gundogan’s desire to renew his expiring deal at City, the question marks around his future are natural.
As Barcelona continually get linked with a transfer involving Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, his agent has responded to the constant exit links.
“I am surprised at where the stories come from about a deal closed for many weeks”, he told Spanish outlet AS. “There is still no agreement with any club. It is not yet decided where he will play in the next few years.”
“Ilkay can still win three major trophies this season as Manchester City captain. That’s the only thing he’s focused on right now.”
HITC View: Losing Gundogan would be a blow for the Sky Blues
Perhaps one of football’s biggest inevitabilities seem to be Bernardo Silva’s exit next summer, considering he has been inches away from leaving the Sky Blues for years on end now.
With that in mind, if Ilkay Gundogan jets away to Barcelona on a free transfer along with his agent after this campaign, Manchester City will be compelled to replace a pair of midfield maestros.
Gundogan is the archetypal Guardiola midfielder and for him to potentially stay for another season, allowing his colleague in midfield to bed in would make life things much easier.
Then again, if the 32-year-old especially wins the Champions League in Manchester this time around, how can one stop him from voyaging to Spain?
