Ilkay Gundogan contract: Pep Guardiola gives honest verdict on club captain's future

As Man City prepare to face Nottingham Forest, Pep Guardiola has provided an update about the future of Ilkay Gundogan, whose contract expires in the summer of 2023.

The £140,000-a-week man was famously the first signing of the Guardiola era in 2016 and while he remains one of the best midfielders in the Premier League to this day, he has constantly been linked with an exit.

Furthermore, the German international turns 33 in October this year, which has created murmurs that perhaps City may be open to a sale, as their focus tends to be on building a young core.

Off the back of their statement 3-1 win against Arsenal, Man City now travel to play against Nottingham Forest, as Pep Guardiola decided to reveal whether Ilkay Gundogan will sign a contract extension.

With Bernardo Silva admitting to eyeing a return to Benfica, many fans consider it a risk to sell another crucial central midfielder in the same summer, in case both bid farewell to the side.

However, Pep Guardiola has said that he would love for Ilkay Gundogan to pen a contract extension, ahead of Man City against Nottingham Forest via Beanyman Sports, “I know my opinion about Ilkay [Gundogan]. Ilkay, what he has done against Aston Villa last season, he can do whatever he wants.”

“He has paradise already. He knows exactly my opinion about him, the club knows it, but it’s a question of the club and him, and his agent. Whatever is going to happen, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be good for him. “Really, we want [him to stay], for how he behaves, is behaving, all his life, all his period here in Manchester. But what’s going to happen, I’m sorry, these kind of things belong to the club and the player.”’

Well, a majority of the Sky Blues faithful will hope that the ageing midfielder puts pen to paper.
