Ilkay Gundogan must not be sold by Manchester City, amid reported Barcelona interest

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is being linked with a move to Barcelona.

ESPN claim the Germany international is on the Spanish giants’ radar, following their failure over Gini Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman is now heading to Paris Saint-Germain, who supposedly offered a more lucrative financial package.

Whether Barcelona actually have the money to be able to afford Gundogan is questionable.

But if they did come in with an offer, the club quite simply have to turn it down and retain the 30-year-old’s services.

Gundogan – a £20 million signing back in 2016 (BBC Sport) – is a player that is absolutely key for Manchester City.

Given the talent across this squad, he hasn’t always gotten his due credit.

Obviously in the season just gone, his goalscoring alerted many more to how good a player he is.

But it should not have taken a few goals for people to take note of Gundogan’s world-class ability.

The man can carry out multiple roles and very rarely gives less than a 7/10 performance.

He is dependable, intelligent, technical and fit as a fiddle.

Some will argue that he’s 30 now, and is perhaps at the peak of his powers and transfer value.

But this is a player that could very well follow in the footsteps of Fernandinho in that he could continue playing for the club at a high level into his mid-thirties, assuming he steers clear of injuries.

Back in March, Pep Guardiola called Gundogan one of the most intelligent players he has ever seen (Goal).

That kind of comment really does say it all.

His ability to control games from the middle of the park is invaluable.

He probably does it better than anyone else in the team, and City just don’t need to be losing a player of his ilk so long as he’s happy at the club.
