Pundit Shaka Hislop has said that he doesn’t see why Manchester City have decided to sign Matheus Nunes.
Earlier today, it was reported that the Manchester club have agreed a deal with Wolves to sign the midfielder for a fee of £53m.
Prior to that, one pundit shared his thoughts on this particular transfer move and the decision from the treble winners to sign the player.
Hislop confused by Nunes move
Speaking in a recent video on the ESPN UK YouTube channel, Hislop had this to say about City’s swoop for Nunes.
He said: “I’m a little bit confused, I’ll be honest with you. While Pep Guardiola is Pep Guardiola and he gets to make these decisions and sees things in players that nobody else does, it’s a little bit confusing to me.
“I just don’t see it with Nunes. Again, Pep will prove me wrong more times than not so he’s earned that right to spend this kind of money.”

After seeing a £47m bid for the 25-year-old get rejected by the Old Gold, Nunes refused to train with Gary O’Neil’s side in an effort to force through a move to the European champions.
Taking into account how Guardiola said back in February 2022 that he felt the 25-year-old is one of the best players in the world, this makes it easy to see why the Citizens have now secured a deal for the midfielder, in addition to the fact that they’ve lost Kevin De Bruyne for the next few months with a hamstring injury.

However, with Nunes only managing to score on goal and deliver one assist in 34 Premier League appearances last season and earn himself a rather underwhelming overall rating of 6.6/10 from WhoScored for his performances, this could be why Hislop has reservations about City’s move for him.
Moving forward, with this deal all but officially confirmed, it’ll be interesting to see how the Portuguese international will fit into this City side and if Guardiola can get the best out of him.
