Jermain Defoe has claimed he can’t wait to see if Erling Haaland can be as deadly in front of goal next season as he was last season.

The striker ended the previous campaign with 52 goals scored in 53 appearances across all competitions, helping the Manchester club win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Now that his second top-flight campaign is not far away from getting started, one former top-flight striker has had his say on how he’s feeling towards the City star.

Speaking in a recent edition of the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Defoe had this to say when asked which player he is most looking forward to seeing in action across the Premier League next season.

He said: “You can’t really look past Haaland because his first season he scored 52 goals, so for me I want him to do the same again, I’m looking forward to see if he can do it back to back seasons because it’s hard in the Premier League.”

Having found the net 36 times in the Premier League last season, the led to the striker, who City paid £51m to sign last summer, securing the record of most goals scored across a 38-game campaign in the top flight.

Bearing in mind how Defoe scored 163 goals in 496 Premier League appearances, it’s safe to say that he knows what it takes to score goals in this division and makes it easy to see why he has a particular interest in Haaland and what he does next season.

Moving forward, if the Norwegian ends up being as proficient in front of goal next season as he was last time out, he’ll definitely be viewed as one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen.
