Pundit Kevin Campbell has suggested that Manchester City could be willing to let Kalvin Phillips leave the club during the upcoming January transfer window.
Having started just one game in all competitions this season, the midfielder found himself being spoken about by Pep Guardiola in his latest press conference.
In it, the Spaniard apologised to Phillips for the lack of game time he’s had and said that he doesn’t visualise the Englishman in his ideal City team.
This has since led to one pundit sharing his thoughts on the situation, including what the upcoming winter transfer window could look like for Phillips.
Campbell backs Phillips for January exit
Speaking in a recent edition of Football Daily, Campbell had this to say on the matter.
He said: “This is one of the sad things about going to a club that are just hell-bent on success. Kalvin Phillips could get into the England squad and can play for England but he can’t play for his club side. It makes no sense.
“Manchester City spent a lot of money to take him from Leeds and he’s not really been given an opportunity to thrive. I’m sure he might be available in January, depending on who comes in and I think you might see Manchester City go into the market in January as well.”
So far this season, the England international, who City paid £45m to sign back in 2022, has started just one game, with Guardiola favouring to play defenders in midfield roles on several occasions.
Taking into account what Guardiola said about not seeing Phillips in his team, it seems likely that regular game time won’t be coming his way throughout the second half of the campaign.
Therefore, it would seemingly suit all parties if Phillips is able to join a side in January that can give him the chance to play on a consistent basis, especially if City can get a suitable fee for him.
