‘I’m sure’: Nedum Onuoha says ‘monumental’ Man City man will leave the club with a ‘huge legacy’

Nedum Onuoha thinks Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City when his current contract runs out.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Spaniard will not be renewing his deal at the Manchester club and is likely to leave in the summer of 2025.

With that in mind, one former City player has shared his thoughts on the matter and what the future could hold for the manager.

Speaking on a recent video from the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Onuoha said this when asked if he feels Guardiola will leave City at the end of his current contract.

He said: “I think as you look back at his managerial career, I think he’s spent half of it at Man City now and initially I thought he’d maybe be here for three years, four years and so on but he’s been there for so long, you see the club’s formed a part of his identity.

“He’s probably gone for goals he wants to achieve himself or maybe just have a break because it’s a very high-pressure role he’s been in for these seven years so far.

“So, I think if he does run down that contract for the next two years I’m sure he’ll try and make those an incredible two years but he deserves the right to have that in his own hands.

“He’s been monumental in terms of the success and the way that English football has changed quite a bit given the fact that he’s brought in a different perspective on it because, lest we forget, when he first came to the country the talk was that he wouldn’t be able to do what he’d done previously in other countries in England and lo and behold he’s managed to do it.

“I think he probably will leave at that point and it’ll be a great shame but I think he’ll leave with a huge legacy.”

Having now completed his seventh season in charge of the Manchester club, the 52-year-old made history with the Citizens by securing the treble having won the FA Cup, their fifth Premier League title in six years as well as their first Champions League.

With 413 games under his belt in charge of City, Guardiola has seen his side win 305 of them, drawing 49 and losing 59 in the process.

Back in November, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager signed a contract extension to keep him at the Etihad until 2025, after which he said he “cannot be in a better place.”

Bearing in mind the significant amount of silverware City have won under Guardiola’s management, it’s easy to see why Onuoha thinks the Spaniard will leave the club with a massive legacy whenever he does decide to walk away.

In our view, City should do all they can to convince the manager to continue in his position for as long as possible even beyond his current deal.

Although, it’s hard to disagree with Onuoha on the point that Guardiola has done enough to warrant that his decision on when he wants to leave should be respected by the club.
