Manchester City are reportedly expecting to secure a summer transfer deal for Mateo Kovacic this week.

Now though, some fresh behind-the-scenes details have emerged on the matter, which could excite a lot of supporters.

After making 109 appearances for Real Madrid, the 29-year-old joined Chelsea on an initial loan deal in 2018 before completing a permanent move to Stamford Bridge a year later for a fee of £40m.

During his time at the west London club, the midfielder has made 221 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals, providing 15 assists and getting his hands on the Europa League and Champions League in the process.

In terms of this proposed move to Pep Guardiola’s side, the fact that this would be City’s first signing of the summer and even approached him before the transfer window opened shows how eager they are to have him in their ranks.

Bearing in mind how the Citizens could be set to lose Ilkay Gundogan as a free agent once his contract expires at the end of the month and he doesn’t choose to sign a new one, bringing Kovacic in could the club’s plan of having a suitable replacement in should the German wave goodbye.
