Josko Gvardiol says ‘incredible’ Rodri has surprised him by how good he is

Branded as ‘extraordinary’ by Pep Guardiola, the £62.8 million (BBC Sport) man is widely considered as the standout defensive midfielder in the world.

In fact, there are some that even believe that the Spanish international is the outright best midfielder on the planet, especially after the unforgettable season he had during City’s treble-winning campaign.

Now, Josko Gvardiol has said that Rodri has left him surprised by how terrific of a player he is.

“About Rodri because he’s always in the movement, always with the ball and just the way he controls the ball, it’s incredible”, he said.

Rodri has surpassed all expectations at Manchester City

Josko Gvardiol sounds like a majority of Manchester City supporters who must surely be in disbelief about how Rodri manages to get better and better, despite already operating at an elite level.

While there was a sense that the 27-year-old was always far too criticised, it seemed fair to claim that he was not fit to succeed Fernandinho on a long-term basis upon his arrival.

Sure, Rodri showed a massive improvement in his game in his second season but even so, he had a slight dip in form at the end of the campaign.

But ever since the 2021/2022 season, the former Atletico Madrid lynchpin has emerged as Manchester City’s best player.

So much so that at this point, many would agree that Rodri may well have surpassed Fernandinho at the peak of his power, which is a testament to how much he has proven his sceptics wrong.
