Pep Guardiola has insisted Matheus Nunes made an ‘incredible impact’ in his first few games for Manchester City.
The Spaniard was speaking ahead of the game with Luton Town at Kenilworth Road today in the Premier League.
City are looking to get back on track after a poor run of results in the last few weeks. The midweek defeat to Aston Villa meant it is now four games without a win in the league for City, which is practically unheard of these days.
City need a win today to close the gap at the top to four points, with Liverpool having beaten Crystal Palace yesterday.
One wonders if we will perhaps see Matheus Nunes, whom Pep spoke about ahead of the game…
Pep Guardiola says Matheus Nunes made ‘incredible impact’ when he first joined Manchester City

Today’s team will be very interesting.
You would imagine that changes will be afoot, after the awful performance against Villa and also since there is a fairly quick turnaround.
£130,000-a-week star Nunes will be hoping for a start since they have been pretty scarce for him since his £53 million summer arrival from Wolves. Of his 11 appearances for the club so far, the Portuguese has only managed to start two Premier League games and a further three in the Champions League.
But Pep spoke positively about Nunes ahead of Luton, saying (via Hayters TV): “Matheus in the first games, the impact was incredible. They’ll (him and Mateo Kovacic) be important, I’m pretty sure…”
Jury still out on Nunes
Nunes looked quite bright in his first few appearances for City but he has somewhat faded into the background a bit in recent weeks.
Clearly, he has a fair bit of work to do at the minute if he is to become a regular starter at the Etihad Stadium.
It was probably always going to pan out for him like this. He’s come into a world-class team from Wolves and needs to adapt to how City play – it certainly cannot be easy.
We have seen over the years that quite a few players can take a full season to get up to speed at City – Joao Cancelo and Rodri are two that spring to mind.
Nunes just needs to keep working. At the moment no one is really nailing down a place in midfield except for Rodri and Bernardo Silva when he’s not needed out wide, so there is a chance for Nunes to stake his claim.
