Pundit Don Hutchison says Manchester City would be crazy not to get Kyle Walker to sign a new contract.
After verbally agreeing to join Bayern Munich earlier in the summer, the 33-year-old changed his mind and has apparently decided to stay at the Etihad Stadium.
With the full-back now considering whether or not to sign a new deal at the Manchester club, one pundit has had his say on the matter.
Pundit says new Walker contract is a no-brainer
Speaking in a recent video on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Hutchison had this to say about Walker and his future at City.
He said: “I think he’s one of the players at Man City in that backline who I think is irreplaceable.
“He’s quicker than most, one-on-one defending is incredible, no one really beats him, the performances he put in against Vinicius Junior were just out of this world.
“And I think if you sold him, you’d be looking around Europe and try and buy the next Kyle Walker, which, I’m not even sure is out there, if he is he’s going to cost you £100m, that seems to be the number these days.
“So why wouldn’t you, if you’re Pep, especially in a summer where you’ve lost [Riyad] Mahrez and you’ve lost [Ilkay] Gundogan, you don’t want to see any more of your first team squad XI leave to make you weaker in a hurry.
“I think you give him a new deal. I think it’s a no-brainer.”
City signed the defender back in 2017 from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £50m.
Since then, the England international has gone on to make 255 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions prior to their opening Premier League match of the season against Burnley.
With the club tabling a second contract offer to Walker, this shows how keen they are to see the veteran continue his journey with Pep Guardiola’s side and help them continue to win trophies.
Also, bearing in mind how Guardiola said during the club’s pre-season tour of Asia that he and the club will fight to keep hold of the right-back, it seems that he has the same opinion as Hutchison regarding how City should do all they can to make sure Walker stays at the Etihad, not just this summer but beyond his current contract which is set to expire next year.
