Manchester City face some big decision this summer – and Pep Guardiola may need to get ruthless.
City are heading towards the Premier League title, but Guardiola will be looking to take that into next season too.
If City are to win back-to-back titles, Guardiola may need to make some changes, with left back a position of concern.
Oleksandr Zinchenko has fared well this season and Joao Cancelo can fill in, but a real star addition is needed given Benjamin Mendy’s regression.
The 26-year-old has shown quality before; he looked superb after arriving from Monaco in 2017, and then hit five assists in just 10 Premier League outings in the 2018-19 season.
Ultimately though, Mendy has only managed 41 Premier League appearances in nearly four years, with injuries and defensive weaknesses playing their part.
City paid £52million for Mendy back in 2017, but now be the time to cut their losses and move him on – if they can find a suitor.
The old Mendy doesn’t look like he’s coming back, and with just seven league starts this season, it seems Guardiola is giving up too.
This isn’t how many expected Mendy’s career to go after bursting onto the scene, but with links to the likes of Robin Gosens and Nuno Mendes, the writing may be on the wall.
