Manchester City claimed a first leg lead over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night – but that doesn’t even come closer to telling the story.
Kevin De Bruyne fired City in front and after Marco Reus equalised for the visitors, Phil Foden handed Pep Guardiola’s men a 2-1 win.
That’s a great result for City ahead of the second leg, but Dortmund are absolutely raging with some of the refereeing on show at the Etihad Stadium.
City were given a first-half penalty by referee Ovidiu Hategan, and whilst he changed his decision after the input of VAR, fans were left baffled by Hategan’s decision and lack of information after VAR’s help.
It got worse as Jude Bellingham scored a perfectly fine goal as he robbed Ederson and tapped home, but Hategan somehow gave a free kick to City for Ederson volleying Bellingham – and then, as if that wasn’t enough, booked Bellingham!
City won’t be complaining too much, as they benefited and claimed the 2-1 win, but this standard of refereeing left Jadon Sancho furious.
The ex-City wide man missed out on facing his former club due to injury, but he was certainly watching the game as he took to Twitter to share his rage.
Sancho suggested that referee Hategan needed checking himself rather than checking VAR, with the England ace unhappy at seeing his teammates suffering injustice; he will just have to hope to be back and making an impact in the second leg.
