Pep Guardiola has seen many players make moves in and out of Manchester City during his time at the club.

Having been in charge of City since 2016, the 53-year-old has used a wide range of players as he’s helped the club win numerous trophies.

Despite having an unbelievably successful time at the Etihad Stadium, the Spaniard has now found one big decision he was involved in being criticised by a pundit ahead of the new Premier League season.

Jamie Carragher claims Pep Guardiola made a big mistake over Cole Palmer leaving Man City

In a recent fan debate edition of The Overlap, Jamie Carragher had this to say on the subject of Cole Palmer including his move away from City, how he’s fared at Chelsea and Guardiola’s decision to let him leave the Manchester club.

He said: “It is one he got wrong. But you know what I almost admire Pep. I don’t think he would have envisaged what was going to happen at Chelsea last season. But number one he has got Foden and Bernardo Silva.

“I think managers in the past would almost not sanction that deal because he has gone to Chelsea, another big club, he could do really well, it makes me look silly.

“But fair play to Pep Guardiola he has given the lad a chance, and fair play to the lad to go out and go and play.

“He is a real Manchester lad, he has gone to London, huge club in Chelsea and I actually think last season when we pick our team of the year, I was just swapping all day between [Phil] Foden and Palmer because I was thinking every time I watch Palmer he scores a goal or creates a goal.”

Palmer has flourished since leaving City

After making 41 senior appearances for City between September 2020 and August 2023, scoring six goals and delivering two assists along the way, Palmer joined Chelsea last summer in a deal worth £42.5m (via BBC Sport).

In his debut season at Stamford Bridge, the former City academy graduate bagged 25 goals and delivered 15 assists in 45 games across all competitions.

Back in July, the winger admitted that he didn’t feel like he benefited from being a bit-part player at the Manchester club.

Having also been named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season, it’s easy to see why Carragher thinks Guardiola made an error in terms of letting such a top talent like Palmer leave City.
