Jamie Carragher predicts the result of Manchester City vs Newcastle this weekend

Manchester City will be hoping to return to winning ways against Newcastle United on Saturday after their latest 3-2 defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Regardless of City’s capitulation against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, Pep Guardiola must have been fully aware before the game that the odds were stacked against his side — potentially not making the result as difficult to take for the Catalan tactician.

But as Manchester City find themselves in a race to secure Champions League football next season, their upcoming contest against Newcastle is somewhat of a cup final for them.

The last time both teams played each other at St. James’ Park, the Sky Blues were perhaps lucky that the game ended 1-1 as the Magpies were far more threatening on the day.

But this time around, Manchester City cannot afford to put in a similarly lackluster display.

Newcastle have lost two of their last five Premier League games away from home as well, giving City a ray of hope that a trip to the Etihad Stadium could be a potential banana skin for them.

Jamie Carragher predicts Newcastle to beat Manchester City

However, beating Eddie Howe’s side will be easier said than done for Manchester City.

With Alexander Isak in fine form and Newcastle being one of the most physically gifted and dangerous teams on the counter-attack, in theory, they could be the Premier League champions’ kryptonite by the time the game begins.

Jamie Carragher certainly thinks so, tipping Newcastle to beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Carragher said on The Overlap US’ show, ‘It’s Called Soccer!: “I’m going to go for… I’m going to go 2-1 Newcastle. So 1-2, yeah, OK. So Newcastle win at Manchester City.”

“Yeah, I think so they’ve played Real Madrid, haven’t they? They’ll have had the Real Madrid game at home. Newcastle are free, yeah, I’m going to go Newcastle 2-1.”

Pep Guardiola was wary of Newcastle at the start of the season, admitting his side would be “trembling” when they played against them.

Pep Guardiola’s record vs Eddie Howe ahead of Man City vs Newcastle

Manchester City supporters have a reason to be optimistic ahead of the contest, however.

Pep Guardiola’s record against Eddie Howe is one to be proud of, facing the Newcastle boss 15 times in his career and winning 12 times, drawing twice and losing just once.

The one defeat came last season and that too in the Carabao Cup when Newcastle won 1-0, which bodes well for Guardiola as his record against Howe is virtually flawless in the league.
