Over the years, Manchester City and Liverpool have had the two best rosters at their disposal.
Considering Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have largely competed for the Premier League title since 2018, it is natural that both managers had world-class squads to work with.
Since the start of the 2022/2023 season, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal also joined the pair as the three best sides in England.
Arne Slot inherited the Liverpool squad left behind by Jurgen Klopp, signing only Federico Chiesa in the summer — who will be hoping to start his first league game after the international break.
It is telling how brilliant the Reds’ squad is that despite signing just one player who has barely featured, Slot has made a better start to any season than every other manager in the Premier League era.
Judging by Manchester City’s success over the past few years, many would find it impossible to look past them having the best group of players at their disposal in England.

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have a better squad than Man City
But so far this season, Liverpool have a five-point advantage over City at the top of the league table and judging by how dominant they have been, they could be the favourites to win the title.

Micah Richards’ Premier League title prediction still sees the Sky Blues reigning supreme, however.
Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick To Football show, Jamie Carragher claimed that now, Liverpool have a better squad than Manchester City.
“I would always say Man City have the best team and the best 18 I’d say. Liverpool have probably got the best 22.”
“They [Liverpool] actually have five forwards who probably all think they should play. They have got decent backup in positions, so in terms of not bringing someone in hasn’t really hurt because they’re not getting the injuries they were last season.”
Last season, the Sky Blues beat Liverpool to the title by nine points, adding more quality to their ranks in Savinho and Ilkay Gundogan this season.
Do Liverpool have a better squad than Manchester City?
Manchester City certainly have more injuries than their title rivals currently.
| MAN CITY INJURIES | EXPECTED RETURN | LIVERPOOL INJURIES | EXPECTED RETURN |
| RODRI | NEXT SEASON | ALISSON BECKER | POST-INTL BREAK |
| RUBEN DIAS | POST-INTL BREAK | DIOGO JOTA | POST-INTL BREAK |
| JOHN STONES | POST-INTL BREAK | FEDERICO CHIESA | POST-INTL BREAK |
| NATHAN AKE | POST-INTL BREAK | – | |
| JEREMY DOKU | POST-INTL BREAK | – | |
| JACK GREALISH | POST-INTL BREAK | – | |
| MANUEL AKANJI | POST-INTL BREAK | – |
As a result, only seven City players are on international duty, with Doku pulling out due to a fresh thigh injury while Ake has suffered another hamstring problem, as per The Athletic.
The likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden have also been injured earlier this campaign.
Based on both squads’ respective level of availability this season, many would be inclined to agree with Jamie Carragher’s claim.
However, if City’s entire squad was fit and ready to play, opinion may have been split right down the middle.
