Jermaine Pennant has claimed that Manchester City have a player on their books who is superior to James Maddison.
Maddison is one of the best attackers in the Premier League and before his injury, he was one of the most in-form players in the division.
The Tottenham Hotspur technician was running the show, creating and scoring goals and the fulcrum of Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Jermaine Pennant says Man City star is better than James Maddison
However, City have several attackers who are comparable to Maddison.
Kevin De Bruyne, for starters, who is also a number 10 and Danny Murphy believes he is one of the three greatest players in Premier League history.
Another player who plays in the same position as James Maddison is Phil Foden, who Jermaine Pennant feels is better than him.
Pennant feels Manchester City attacker Foden’s presence is a key reason why he would exclude Maddison from England’s squad for Euro 2024.
On talkSPORT, he said”: “[James] Maddison, I’m leaving him out because you’ve got more or less three players in the same position. [Eberechi] Eze, I reckon’s a better player, number 10 than Maddison. Foden will be playing the number 10 spot where Maddison would play. He’s better than Maddison so you don’t need to take him.”
Phil Foden is certainly the better player than the Spurs midfielder
In our view, it is tough to disagree with Jermaine Pennant as the 2023/2024 season was proof that Phil Foden is a better player than James Maddison.
The £225,000-a-week man was arguably the best player in the Premier League, leading Manchester City to the title; heights Maddison is yet to hit in his career.
Despite the former Leicester City midfielder being three years older than Foden, he could learn plenty from the latter in terms of his eye for goal, how he finds pockets of free space to occupy and his ability to burst past players.
Considering Jermaine Pennant was discussing the England set-up, unlike James Maddison, Phil Foden also offers Gareth Southgate the chance to play across the front three as well as in midfield.
Apart from during a stint at Leicester where Maddison played out wide during the 2022/2023 season, he is yet to do so in his career.
Meanwhile, Foden has across several seasons and against top teams like Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in the past; often on either flank.
